Figurative-Language

Figurative Language used in poems or writing.

QuestionAnswer
What does idiom mean? Give an example. A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words. Example: It's raining cats and dogs.
What does personification mean? Give an example. Giving something human qualities. Example: The horse talked.
What does metaphor mean? Give an example. Comparing two things by using one kind of object or using in place of another to suggest the likeness between them. Example: Sally is a ray of sunshine.
What does hyperbole mean? Give an example. Big exaggeration, usually with humor. Example: I have told you a million times.
What does simile mean? Give an example. A figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is introduced by like or as. Example: Life without color is like living in a black hole.
What does alliteration mean? Give an example. The repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables. Example: Sally sold silly sandals on sale at her shoe store.
What does onomatopoeia mean? Give an example. Naming a thing or an action by imitating the sound associated with it. Example: Meow.
What does oxymoron mean? Give an example. A figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction. Example: Jumbo Shrimp
What does imagery mean? Give an example. Visually descriptive. Example: The water rippled when the grey sandstone pebble skipped across.
What does repetition mean? Repetition is the repeating of words and/or phrases.
