How did the Minoan improve their ship building? They built them slimmer and made them with 2 to 3 mast and deck over the head to protect them.
How did Minoan get control over the sea? The new ships had a wooden beam in the prow that could smash a hole in enemy ships to sink them.
When did the Minoans get control over the sea? 2000 B.C.
What Minoans trade? Pottery, leather and bronze armor, metal jewerly
What did Minoans men wear? loin clothes, long robes and braided with flowers or trousers
What did Minoans woman wear? skirts and short sleeve jackets
What did the Minoans men jobs? farmed, fished, and raised cattle,sheep, goats. They also served in navy and royal guard
What did the Minoans woman do? household duites, sporting events, hunting in charets
Describe the Minoans arena (Minoans built this first) Stood in open, stone steps formed grand steps and 500 people could be seated. King and Royal party had royal seats.
What events did Minoans hold at the arena? Boxing matches, and bull leaping
Describe bull leaping Young men or woman would fight a bull. Men would grab bulls horns. Bull will raise head and toss him, man would do somersault and land on standing on bulls back. Then back backflip.
How were the Minoan cities different then the rest of the civilizations? At the heart at the main city was a palace. The had no walls they depended on the (sea and navy)
What was the largest city? Knossos
Describe Knossos 28 acres or 11.2 hectors, a 5th of the area was taken by a 5 story palace that served as a (gov. building, temple, factory and warehouse) it had decorated walls (frescoes), bathroom, bathtubs, toilets. also labyrinth known as Double Ax.
What was the palace in Knossos nicknamed? The house of the Double Ax.
Who lived around the Minoans palace? Sea Captains, merchants, and ship builders
How many stories where the Minoans houses? 2
Describe the Minoans house. The lower walls made of stone, upper walls made of sun dried brick, inside walls painted from scenes of daily life. Each one had well and drain.
What did the Minoans houses not have? Entrance to the street.
How did the Minoans use Parchment (thin animal skin) for building a house? It was used as windows and doors
Who were the rulers of Crete? Priest Kings
What did Priest Kings do in the Crete society? They made laws and represented the Gods on Earth.
Where did the Priest Kings go to get signs from Heaven? Mount Juktas
What was the Minoans main God and what did it do? Mother Earth. She made plants grow and brought children into the world.
How did the Minoans honor Mother Earth? They build shrines on palaces, house tops, hill tops, and caves.
What was sacred to the Minoans? flower, lilies, Double Ax it stood for Mother Earth and authority of king and dove because it flew to heaven.
What happened in 1400 B.C.? The Minoan civilization fell and the control of the sea passed to the Mycenaeans.
What legend explains the fall of the Minoans? Theseus and the minotaur
