Properties of Matter

What is a Chemical Change? A reaction between two or more substances together resulting in new substances of a different identity.
What is a Physical Change? A change in size, shape, color or state, but the identity of the substance remains the same.
How is a Chemical Change represented in chemical shorthand? by a Chemical Equation.
What are the two pure substances? Elements & Compounds
What is a pure substance? Anything that contains only one kind of matter.
What is an element? The simplest form of matter that exists under normal conditions.
What is a compound? A chemical combination of two or more elements, always the same in structure & ratio, making a unique substance, different from the elements that compose it.
What is a mixture? A mix or physical combination, not structurally combine at the atomic level, of two or more elements &/or compounds.
What is a reactant? The beginning substances in a chemical reaction.
What is a product? The ending substances in a chemical reaction.
What is a property? characteristic
What is the Law of Conservation of Mass? Mass can neither be created nor destroyed.
How is the Law of Conservation of Mass represented in a chemical equation? Total Mass of Reactants must equal Total Mass of Products. The equation must be balanced. Atoms of each element in reactants must equal number of atoms of each element of products.
Homogeneous? The same distribution of particles throughout a mixture.
Heterogeneous? Uneven distribution of particles throughout a mixture.
What is the abbreviation for an element called? Symbol
What is the abbreviation for a compound called? Formula
Describe a solid. Definite shape & volume.
Describe a liquid. Definite volume & Indefinite shape.
Describe a gas. Indefinite shape & volume.
Where is the state of plasma found? Sun & stars.
