Photosynthesis The process by which plants and some other organisms capture and use light energy to make food and from carbon dioxide and water  
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a specific function in an organism  
Chloroplast A plant cell structure in which photosynthesis occurs  
Vacuole A large sac-like storage area in a cell  
Cuticle The waxy, waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of most plants
Vascular Tissue The internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made up of tubelike structures  
Fertilization The joining of a sperm cell and an egg spell  
Zygote A fertilized egg  
Nonvascular Plant A low growing plant that lacks true vascular tissue.
Vascular Plant A plant that has true vascular tissue  
Chlorophyl A green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and some bacteria  
Sporophyte The stage in the life cycle of a plant in which the plant produces spores  
Gametophyte The stage in the life cycle of a plant in the plant produces gametes, or sex cells  
Transmission The process by which light passes through an object
Reflection The process by which light bounces off an object
Absorption The process by which an object takes in, or absorbs, light
Accessory Pigment A pigment other than chlorophyl found in plant cells
rhizoid A thin, rootlike structure that anchors a moss and absorbs water and nutrients for the plants
bog A wetland where sphagnum moss grows on top of acidic water
peat Compressed layers of dead sphagnum mosses that accumulate in bogs
Frond The leaf of a fern plant
