| Chronological Order | Organizational pattern in which details are arranged in the order they occur. |
| Climax | The point of the highest action of the story; the turning point |
| Complicating Incident | An important early event that signals the start of the action of a story and introduces the conflict. |
| Conflict | A clash or struggle between people, ideas, or feelings; characters can have a conflict with themselves, with another character, society, or nature. |
| Exposition | A brief section at the beginning of the story that presents readers with the characters, setting, and basic situation. |
| Falling Action | The conclusion of the story, which includes the resolution of the conflict. |
| Flashback | A narrative technique that allows the author to introduce the past events that have a direct effect on current events. |
| Foreshadow | A technique authors use to give clues about or to suggest what is going to happen. |
| Genre | A category of literary work, such as poetry, novel, or drama. |
| Imagery | Language that creates a mental picture by appealing to the senses, that makes readers see, hear, smell, taste, or feel things in their imagination; for example, "the coal-black night," "the stinging cold," "the rapping and tapping of rain on the roof." |
| Irony | The effect of language in which the intended meaning is the opposite of what one would have thought is actually what occurs. |
| Resolution | The solution or working out of a literary conflict. |
| Rising Action | A series of events that builds interest or suspence. |
| Setting | Where and when a literary work takes place |
| Symbol | Something concrete that stands for a more abstract idea in literature; for example, a dove may be a symbol for peace. |
| Symbolism | The literary technique of using something to stand for or represent another idea; for example, a dove may frequently symbolizes peace, while a single red rose sometimes represents love. |
