Connotation the set of ideas/emotions associated with a word in addition to its actual meaning
Denotation the dictionary meaning of a word
Simile the comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as
Metaphor a comparison of two unlike things without using like or as
Personification nonhuman subject is given human characteristics
Onomatopoeia the use of words that imitate sounds
Alliteration the repetition of initial consonant sounds.
Literal following the ordinary or usual meaning of words
Irony a contradiction between what happens and what is expected
Mood the feeling created in the reader by a literary work
Tone the writer’s attitude toward his/her audience and subject
Allusion a reference to a well-known person, event, place, literary work, or work of art.
Repetition the use, more than once, of any element of language—sound, word, phrase, clause, or sentence
