lymph drainage

lymph drainage class should know information

QuestionAnswer
Mondern lymph drainage massage (LDM) was devoloped largley by Who in the 1930's? Drs. Emil and Estrial Vodder
What is Edema? an unusual accumulation of fluid in soft tissues that can be temporary and mild or serious, as in chronic lymphedema
What is Primary Lymphedema cause by it is due to congenital malformation of blood and/or lymph vessels
LDM or LDT helps stimulate the Immune sytem How? because it helps move stagnant fluids out of the tissues and into the lymphatic vessels where is can be transported through the lymph nodes and purified by the lymphocytes
Secondary Lymphedema is caused by? Obstruction due to infection, injury, irradiation, or surgery (such as elephantiasis
How is LDM/LDT Proformed? It is very light, gental, and strickly placed. it does not use long strokes, heavy pressure, or such rapid movements as percussion, or pain and discomfort.
What are Negative effects of lymphedema? Bacteria can multiply in stagnant fluid, causing cellulities. Chronic lymphedema can casue the skin to thicken, cool, and coarsen and become prone to injury, infecton. the body treats proteins in stagnant interstital fluid as foreign particals.
Symptoms of chronic lymphedema? inflammation and is symptoms pain, heat, redness, and more edema
What are lymphocytes? are immune cells that are distributed hroughout the body in blood, tissue fluid, and lymph.
what do lymph Vessels carry? lymph to the lymph nodes, then to the right lymphatic duct and the thoracic duct.
What are the two Lymphatic ducts? 1) the right lymphatic duct, and 2) the thoracic duct
Lymphatic vessesls from the right arm and the right half of the head, neck, and chest converge in the right lymphatic duct which empties where? the right subclavian vein.
the thoracic duct is located in the thoracic cavity and arises from what? the cisterna chyli, a collecting vessel that receives fluid from the small intestines.
Lymph circulation differs from blood circulation because the lymphatic system lacks a centeral pump like the heart. What are some other differences? the lympatic system has more than one pump called lymphangiones, lymph vessels are closed at one end, are porous along ther length.
Once therapists are in contact with the skin, they should maintain connection with the same area for at least a minuet, repeating the stroke with the same pressure direction and speed until what? until there is a palpable change in the tissue
the greater the inertial mass(the amount of fluid in the tissue to be moved),what? the slower the movements must be.
When there is a great deal of fluid to be moved, massage strokes may be repeated as slowly as six circles a minuet, approximately the rate at which the peripheral lymphatics contract, the rate of lymph flow is realatively slow compared to blood flow so? LDM must be correspondingly slow, synhronizing with physiologic processes.
Vodder estimated the proper pressure for lymph drainage to be? less than 8 ounces per square inch. the pressure in the peripheral lymphatics is even less, approximately less than 1 to 8 ounces per square inch.
moving the skin stimulates the lymphangiones to contract, and also pulls the microfilaments that connect the initial lymphatics to the surrounding tissues, causing what? the endothelial flaps to open and allowing interstitial fluids to enter the inital lymphatics.
The basic pattern of lymph drainage therapy is what? to clear the flow into the subclavian veins, drain lymph nodes, then the related quadrant of the trunk, and gradually work outward to the end of the extremity. the purpose is to make room for more fluid which will be drained from the adjacent areas.
where should you move lymph when working on the back of the thighs the inguinal Nodes
Where should you move the lymph when working on the lower abdomen? the inguial Nodes.
lymph from the superficial lymphatics of the head drains inferiorly toward the lymph nodes in the water wheel. lymph from the top of the head and the back of the head drains to the occipital nodes, then where then towards the cervical nodes in the general area of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. lymph from the facial lymphatics drains towards the preauricular, parotid, and mandibular nodes, then into the cervical nodes.
what are Contraindications of LDM? Cancer without seeking advice of a Doctor, open wounds, rashes, inflamed skin conditions, Takin immune-suppressing medications after having Organ transplan. Blood clots, phlebitis, varicose veins, heart, kidney,or liver disease.
What are the Basic lymph drainage strokes Circular and J stroke faris wheel.
Is LDM and important part of cellulite therapy Yes
What is a lymph node? Collectons of lymph tissue that filter lymph, destroying microorganisms that may be dangerous to the body.
Approximately how many lymph nodes does the human body have? 400 to 700
What factors can cause edema lacking exercise, poor dieting, sustaining scar tissue and soft-tissue injury, heart or kidney disease, medications, radiation therapy, allergies, mensteral cycle, emotional tension, illness, toxions, trama.
Lymph vessesl that carry lymph toward the nodes are calld afferent vessesl; Vessels that carry lymph out of the nodes toward the lymphatic ducts are called efferent vessesls each lymph has what more afferent vessels than efferent which effectively slows lymph circulatoin at the nodes.
inflammation resulting from over use, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tennise elbow, and frozen shoulder, respond well to LDM why? LDM speeds healing, reduces inflammation, reduces pain, and improves circulation.
LDM stands for Lymph Drainage massage But Dr bruno chickly didnt want to call it a massage. Why? Because your not massaging the skin your pulling the flaps will little pressure at all
who Changed the Name from LDM to LDT Bruno Chickly
What does MLM stand for Maual lymphatic Mapping.
