QuestionAnswer
metaphor comparing two things without using like or as
Simile comparing two things using the words like or as
Foreshadowing to hint at what is to come later in a story
personification Giving human abilities or emotions to non-human objects.
hyperbole An exaggeration--not meant to be taken literally
theme A story’s main idea about human nature
situational Irony When what happens is the opposite of what is expected
Tragedy A story that ends in the main character’s permanent downfall
protagonist The main character(s). The one(s) you root for.(Can be the hero, but is not always a “good guy”)
Antagonist The character(s) who opposes, or goes against, the protagonist(s)
Allusion An indirect reference to something that is generally familiar “What a Scrooge!”
Dramatic Irony When the audience knows something that the characters on stage do not know
Inference A conclusion based on evidence (observation) and reasoning (what you already know about the world).
Observation What you can see with your own eyes.
