| Simile | comparing two things using the words like or as |
| Foreshadowing | to hint at what is to come later in a story |
| personification | Giving human abilities or emotions to non-human objects. |
| hyperbole | An exaggeration--not meant to be taken literally |
| theme | A story’s main idea about human nature |
| situational Irony | When what happens is the opposite of what is expected |
| Tragedy | A story that ends in the main character’s permanent downfall |
| protagonist | The main character(s). The one(s) you root for.(Can be the hero, but is not always a “good guy”) |
| Antagonist | The character(s) who opposes, or goes against, the protagonist(s) |
| Allusion | An indirect reference to something that is generally familiar “What a Scrooge!” |
| Dramatic Irony | When the audience knows something that the characters on stage do not know |
| Inference | A conclusion based on evidence (observation) and reasoning (what you already know about the world). |
| Observation | What you can see with your own eyes. |
