| Analogy | A Comparison between two or more things that are similar in some ways but otherwise unlike. |
| antonym | opposite/ opposite meanings |

| conclusion | The ending; resolution; when the conflict has been worked out. |
| conflict | A struggle between opposing forces. |
| external conflict | A struggle between the charater and some outside force( another person or a force of nature). |
| internal conflict | A struggle within the mind of the character. |
| context clues | Using the words/ sentences in a text to help you figure out the meaning of an unknown word. |
| climax | The highest point of action of the plot; the moment of greatest tension. |
| exposition | Introduction; the part of the work that introduces the characters, setting, and basic situation. |
| Fact | A statement that can be proven. |
| Falling Action | follows the climax in a story; when things are beginning to be wrapped up/ resolved. |
| Footnote | Comment on the bottom of the page referring to something on the page. |
| Illustration | A picture or a diagram. |
| Logical | something that makes sense. |
| Opinion | A statement that deals with feelings and emotions. |
| Point of view | the perspective or vantage point from which a story is told (1st person-"I", 3rd person- limited- "he/she" but knows thoughts and feeling of a character. 3rd person- omniscient- the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of EACH character."all knowing". |
| Predict/Prediction | A guess as to what you think will happen. |
| Resolution | The outcome of the conflict in a plot. |
| Rising Action | The events leading up to the climax of a story. |
| Setting | the time and place of the action. |
| Synonym | a word having a meaning that is the same or nearly the same as another word. |
| Writer's purpose | The reason that a writer writes- to inform/explain, to entertain, or to persuade/convince. |
| Inference | BK + TC = I ( background knowledge plus text clues equals inference). |
| Adverb | A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb; it answers the question where, when, in what way, or to what extent. |
| Linking Verb | A word/verb that connects the subject of a sentence with a noun or pronoun that renames or describes the subject. |
| Prefix | word put at the beginning of a word to change its meaning or to form another word. |
| Root | Word from which other words are made. |
| Subject Pronoun | A word used to name or rename the subject in a sentence. |
| Suffix | An additon made at the end of a word to form another word of different meaning. |
