How did King Henry improve English law? King Henry issued the Constitution of Clarendon,a document that he said had spelled out the king's traditional rights. His reforms also strengthen the power of royal courts at the expense of feudal lords
What changes did the Magna Carta bring about English government? King John ruled more fairly by observing common law and the rights of barons and the church. Also "no free man' could be jailed expect by the lawful judgement of his peers or by law of land
What was the Model Parliament? A governing body which included commoners and lower-ranking clergy
Why was the Model Parliament created? King Edward created it as a way to include more people in the government
How did the political developments in England contribute to the decline of feudalism in Europe? By the help of the Model Parliament and Magna Carta the King was not needed which caused the top of the feudal pyramid to crumble
What areas of the world were affected by the spread of the plague in the 14th century? China,India,Europe,the Near East and Asia
Why was the plague called the Black Death? The name came from the black and blue blotches that appeared on the victim's skin
How was the plague spread? The disease was carried by fleas who fed on rodents blood, but when the rodents died the fleas jumped to people. Rats got onto boats and the plague spread around the world
How did the outbreak of the plague contribute to the decline of feudalism in Europe? Many died, trade and commerce slowed down, Europe was poor, their were less workers and people
How did the Hundred Years' War start? The Kings of Europe believed part of France's land was their own fiefs well the French disagreed
Why were the English able to defeat the French in early battles, such as the one in Crecy? The English army had longbow which could shoot fairly at far away verus the French crossbow which was only good at a close range
Who was Joan of Arc? A seventeen year old peasant girl
What did Joan do for the French during the Hundred Years' War? Joan believed to hear voices of saints telling her to save France and go to battle so she brought France to victory
How did the war contribute to the decline of feudalism? It helped to shift powers from the monarchs to the feudal lords and commoners
Habeas Corpus The principle that accused persons cannot be held in jail without consent of a court
commoner A person who is not of a noble rank ("peasant")
crossbow A medieval weapon made up of a bow that was fixed across a wooden stock(which had a groove to direct the arrow's flight) and operated by a trigger
longbow A large bow used for firing feathered arrows
truce An agreed-upon halt in fighting (made peace for a little while)
heretic A person who holds beliefs that are contrary to the teachings of a church or other group
Magna Carta A written agreement that limited the king's power and strengthened the rights of the nobles
Hundred Years' War A long series of wars from 1337-1453 between France and England
