| Metaphor | Comparing 2 things without using like or as (ex. Her smile is the bright sunshine. |
| Hyperbole | extreme exaggeration (ex. I've watched that movie a million times!) |
| Personification | giving a non-human thing/animal human traits (ex. The sun smiled down on me.) |
| irony | double meaning; contradiction; twist; sarcasm (ex. Winning the lottery and then dying the next day.) |
| symbol | something that represents something else (ex. Doves represent peace; the US Flag represents freedom). |
| alliteration | repeating the same consonant sound (ex. Sandy slipped silently across the sidewalk) |
| imagery | Creating a picture in one's mind; visualization (usually very descriptive) |
| repetition | Repeating the same idea, word, or sound (ex. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!) |
| rhyme | words that have the same ending sound (ex. cat/hat; would/should; good/hood) |
| onomatopoeia | word that creates a sound (ex. boink! Crash! Buzz!) |
| idiom | a phrase whose meaning is very different than its literal meaning |
| allusion | referring to a person, place, or event from literature, sports, movies, or arts (something "famous") |
