QuestionAnswer
Texture- thinness or thickness of sound
Monophonic- single, melodic line and no accompaniment or other horizontal or vertical sounds. (Chant is an example)
Polyphonic- Music consisting of two or more melodies sounding at the same time, having equal emphasis but not necessarily starting and stoping at the same time. (Counterpoint is an example)
Homophonic- One predominant melody(in the foreground), supported by a harmonic or chordal accompaniment (in the background)
Where was the theory of western music derived from? The greek philosophers
Where was the religious rituals of the Roman Catholic Church derived from? They were borrowed and adapted from the Jewish Synagogue services.

Chant- a type of song found in many cultures and traditions, monophonic sound without accompaniment.

What were the three periods of the Renaissance? Humanism, Optimism and Reform.
The part of the Catholic liturgy that has produced the most important sacred music is ? The Mass
What is a Low Mass? The priest intones or recites the prayers, and the congregation remains silent.
What is a High Mass? The liturgy is recited and sung by a choir, either in Gregorian Chant or in a combination of chant and polyphonic choral settings.
What was the first important polyphonic setting and who composed it? Messe de Nostre Dame, and Guillaume de Machaut composed it.
What was the significance of the first important polyphonic setting? Its "unity".
Benedicta es 's genre- Chant
"Gloria", from Missa Benedicta es 's genre- A polyphonic setting of the second part of the ordinary Mass.
Motet- A sacred Polyphonic composistion, usually sung in Latin without accompaniment.
Polychoral motets- Motets for multiple choirs.
Homorhythmic- Sections in which the text is sung by all voices at once, making the words more understandable.
Madrigal- A secular composition, reflecting the growing independence of the arts from the church.
What are three choral genres? Mass, Motet, and Madrigal
