Poetry Elements for SMS
| Poetic Term | Definition |

| simile | a comparison using like or as |
| metaphor | a comparison that does not use like or as and usually compares two unlike things |
| limerick | a nonsense poem of five lines, usually with the rhyme scheme aabba |
| couplet | two successive lines of poetry, especially two of the same length that rhyme |
| alliteration | repetition of an initial sound in two or more words of a phrase or line of poetry |
| stanza | a group of lines forming one of the divisions of a poem, like a paragraph |
| free verse | poetry without rhyme, meter, or stanza formation |
| narrative poem | a story told in verse, often with all the elements of short stories, including characters, setting, conflict, and plot |
| speaker | the character who tells the poem |
| concrete poetry | poetry meant to be seen on a page as well as heard, words are arranged into a shape, often the subject of the poem |
| rhyme | repetition of a sound in two or more words or phrases |
| end rhyme | rhyme that occurs at the end of lines |
| exact rhyme | sounds of words that are exactly alike |
| half rhyme | words whose sounds are similar, but not identical |
