| Simile : | Comparison of two things using like or as |
| Metaphor | Direct comparison of two things |
| Personification | An inamiate object (non-human) is given human characteristics |
| Onomatopoeia | When they sound like the word they describe (sound word) example - bang, crash, smack |
| Alliteration | Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of two or more words example - More music, More FM. |
| Assonance | Repetition of vowel sounds within a series of words. Example = the hooting hoot of a car horn. |
| Rhyme | Similarity of a sound, usually found at the end of lines |
| Rhythm | The price or tempo at which a passage moves. (meter) Example = ballad/sonnet |
| Repetition | Words or phrases are repeated |
| Hyperbole | Over exaggerated phrases/words. |
| Pun | play on words. The use of homophones (words with the same sound) Example = Meat me at the factory |
| Cliche | An overused phrase (happily ever after) |
| Rhetorical question | A question that does not require an answer |
| Euphemism | An understatement |
| Imperative | A command, request, order. |
| Irony | The humorous or mildly sarcastic use of words to imply the opposite of what they normally mean |
| Listing | I few linked ideas/items |
| Statistics | To give numbers or percentages |
| Jargon | Specialized language Example = syringe, sethascope, ears, eyes, heart. |
| Slang | Words or expressions that belong to a particular group of people. |
| Qoutation | To quote a phrase |
| Colloquial language | Relaxed or informal language |
| Idiom | Expressions which are not meant to be taken literally. |
