How did Washington respond to conflicts between France and Great Britain? issued the Neutrality Proclamation, stating that the US would not take sides in European conflicts
How did Jefferson's and Hamilton's view on US policy toward France and Britain differ? Jefferson - believed US should back France bec France had supported the US during the Revolutionary war. Hamilton - pro British; hoped to strengthen trading ties with Britain - the most powerful trading nation in the world at the time.
Why did Jefferson decide to resign from Washington's cabinet in 1793? Jefferson thought that Hamilton had too much influence on the president's foreign policy and that Hamilton consequently interfered with his role as secretary of state.
What conflict prompted Jay's treaty? (2) The British were seizing neutral American merchant ships and helping Native Americans fight settlers
Why did some Americans protest Jay's treaty? thought it hurt trade and failed to make the British stop kidnapping American sailors or pay slaves the British freed during the Revolutionary war
What conflict prompted Pinckney's treaty? The Spanish disputed the birder between the US and Florida. Spain closed the port of New Orleans to US trade in 1784 and hurt the American economy
What were the terms agreed upon on the Pinckney's treaty? (1) Spain agreed to recognize the US southern boundary as 31N latitude (2) gave American access to the port at New Orleans and (3) the right of deposit
What is right of deposit? this right would allow American boats to transfer goods in New Orleans without paying cargo fees
Why did Native Americans go to war in the Northwest in the early 1790s and who led them? because Americans continued to settle the Northwest territory; led by Miami chief Little Turtle
What were the results of the Battle of Fallen Timbers (2) (1) US victory broke the strength of Indian forces in the region (2) led to Treaty of Greenville under which Native Americans gave up much of their land for $20,000 and a guarantee of their safety
Why did Congress pass a tax on American-made whisky? (2) (1) to raise money to pay off the federal debt (2) to test the power of the federal govt to control state's action
Why did president Washington decide to lead the military action against the Whiskey rebellion (2) (1) he feared that the rebels threatened the federal govt's authority (2) he believed he needed to make people understand that the Constitution gave Congress the right to pass and enforce the tax.
What was the significance of the Whiskey Rebellion? helped emphasize the authority of the federal govt to pass taxes and to put down domestic rebellions
Why did the Pennsylvania farmers refuse to pay the whisky tax? (2) they had made the whiskey and should have been able to keep the profits form its sale; they could not afford the tax and had to travel long distances to plead their ase
In what ways were Jay's treaty and Pinckneys's treaty similar and different? similar - compromises that settled disputes with foreign nations; different - Americans favored more the Pinckney's treaty
What warnings did Washington give the nation in his Farewell Address? or issues Washington believed were most dangerous to the future of the new nation. (3) warned the nation about the dangers of foreign ties, political divisions or conflicts, and public debt
Why did Washington warm against growing political conflicts within the nation? thought they weakened govt and that political unity was key to national success.
