Nutrition vocabulary for 9th Grade Health

QuestionAnswer
A desire, rather than a need to eat. Appetite
Consists of complex fibers and starches as well as simple sugars. The body uses this nutrient for energy. Carbohydrates
A form of the complex carbohydrates that cannot be digested and helps with bowel movement. Fiber
This nutrient contains lipids. It provides energy, helps protect vital organs, and insulates the body. Fat
This nutrient is made of amino acids and helps the body grow and repair muscles. Protein
The natural drive that protects you from starvation. Hunger
This tells you the last day you should use a product. Expiration Date
A condition in which the body's immune system overreacts to substances in some foods. Food Allergy
Vitamins and Minerals- the body only needs these in small amounts. Micronutrients
Nutrients that have been lost during processing are added back. Enrichment
Substances added to food intentionally to add a desired affect. Food Additives
A disorder in which the irrational fear of becoming obese results in severe weight loss from self-induced starvation. Anorexia
A disorder in which cycles of overeating are followed by some form of purging or clearing of the digestive tract. Bulimia
The process by which the body takes in and uses food. Nutrition
Substances in food that your body needs to function properly, such as in growing, in repairing itself, and in having a supply of energy. Nutrients
The process by which your body gets energy from food. Metabolism
Food poisoning. Foodbourne Illness
The cycle of losing, regaining, losing and regaining weight. Weight Cycling
Foods high in nutrients relative to their caloric content. Nutrient Dense
Not eating Fasting
Examples of this: Culture, Family/ Friends, Advertising, Time, Money, Emotions Factors that Affect Eating Habits
May include eliminating a food group, using a weight loss aid, and/or promising spot reduction. Fad Diets
A substance that spoils or infects food. Contaminate
A fatty substance that does not dissolve in water. Lipids
Chemical substances that make up body proteins. Amino Acids
Eating only extremely healthy food items. Orthorexic
The way one views his/her own body and believes others view it. Body Image
Everything a person eats or drinks. Diet
Food that is raw, unprocessed, and lacks preservatives. Fresh
Food that has calories reduced by at least one-third. Light
