perseverance to never quit; keep trying even when faced with difficulties or obstacles
theme idea or lesson in a story play or other literary work. Universal theme applies to anyone anytime.
characterization how author explains characters personalities. 4 kinds of characterization.
inference assumption based on a writers words and on your own knowledge and experience.
external conflict when a character struggles with an outside force. Person vs. Person/ person vs nature/ person vs. society/ person vs. supernatural
internal conflict struggle in ones mind, includes desires, emotions and needs. Person vs self
convey to make an idea, impression, feeling known to someone else
attributes qualities, characteristics or traits that describe someone.
omniscient all- knowing. Third person omniscient is storytelling where narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in the book.
connotation feeling a word suggest(positive/negative)
denotation words meaning in the dictionary
cite a quote or reference as authoritative proof
analysis identifying and understanding literary techniques that have made it effective and explaining and identifying it.
explicit fully and clearly expressed and developed
symbolism a person, place, thing or event that has its own meaning for something beyond itself as well. The use of images to represent internal realities.
metaphor comparison NOT using like or as
simile comparison USING like or as
point of view how a story Etc. is told or narrated. This determines how much info a reader is given. first- narrator in story using I third limited- focused on on characters thoughts third omniscient- reports what all characters think outside story
