Literary TermsDefinitions
Protagonist main character in fiction or drama
Antagonist the adversary of a hero in a story or play
Setting the time and place of a story or play
Exposition beginning portion of a plot that gives information about characters and setting
Rising Action events in a plot that build towards a climax
Climax moment of great emotional intensity or suspense in a plot (the turning point)
Falling Action the events following the climax
Resolution the portion of the plot in which the complications are resolved
Personification kind of metaphor where a nonhuman thing is given human characteristics
Symbol person, place, thing, or event that stands for itself and for something beyond itself as well
Allusion reference to something external (Bible, pop culture, etc.)
Irony the contrast between expectations and reality
Dramatic Irony when a character’s words or actions carry a larger meaning s/he does not perceive
Rhetorical Questions a question asked for effect
Foreshadowing the use of clues to hint at events that will occur later in the plot
Flashback inserted scene where characters are taken from the present to the past
Dialogue conversation between characters in a story or a play
Point of View vantage point from which a writer tells a story
Stage Directions things that tell the actors where to go, how to stand, etc
Props items that add to the play
Acts how a play is divided up
