Alcohol Prevention

Ethanol the type of alcohol in alcoholic beverages (it is a very powerful and addictive drug)
Fermentation the chemical reaction of yeast on sugars
Depressant a drug that slows down the central nervous system
Intoxication the state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol or another substance and the person's physical and mental control is significantly reduced
Alcohol Abuse the excessive use of alcohol
Blood Alcohol Concentration the amount of alcohol in a person's blood expressed as a percentage
Alcohol Poisoning a severe and potentially fatal physical reaction to an alcohol overdose (occurs most with young college students)
Detoxification a process in which the body adjusts to functioning without alcohol
Binge Drinking drinking five or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting
Recovery the process of learning to live an alcohol-free life
Metabolism the process by which the body breaks down substances
Sobriety living without alcohol
Alcoholic an addict who is dependent on alcohol
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome a condition in which a fetus has been adversely affected mentally and physically by its mother's heavy alcohol use during pregnancy
Fatty Liver a condition in which fats build up in the liver and cannot be broken down
Cirrhosis a condition in which liver tissue is destroyed and then replaced with useless scar tissue (can lead to liver failure and death)
Tolerance a condition in which a person needs to drink more and more to produce the same effects
Dependance a condition in which the body has developed a chemical need for alcohol
Proof and Alcohol Percentage the units that measure how much alcohol is in a beverage
