Figurative Language when you describe something by comparing it to something else

Symbolism literary device where object represents idea
Allusion a reference in 1 literary work to another lit work/event
Personification a figure of speech in which something non human is given human characteristics
Analogy the comparison of 2 things that share a similar relationship, may not be apparent
Anecdote a short story someone tells about their life to prove a point
allegory a story which illustrates an idea or moral in which objects take on symbolic meanings
Style how authors create meaning using figurative language, diction, sound, effects, etc.

rising action events leading to climax that build suspense

flashback reference to an event which took place before beginning of story
theme main idea of story + what author wants you to take away
Conflict occurs when protagonist is opposed by person or force
point of view perspective from which story is told
characterization (give methods) method a writer uses to reveal character's personality , personality, physical appearance, what they say/do, what others think of him/her
Protagonist hero/central character of story
antagonist character/force that opposes protagonist
stereotype author's method of treating a character so that he/she is automatically put into 1 group
foil a character who sets off main character by comparison - usually opposites
dialogue conversation between characters
soliloquy a character speaks his/her thoughts

inference a judgment based on reasoning rather than direct evidence
Hyperbole exaggeration or overstatement
understatement statement which minimizes importance of what is meant
satire a piece of literature designed to ridicule subject
verbal irony contrast between what is said and what is meant
dramatic irony contrast between what character thinks and what reader knows
situational irony contrast between what happens and what is expected to happen
rhyme scheme order in which rhyming words occur in a poem

anthropomorphism describing of gods + goddesses in human form + giving them human characteristics
