1st and 2nd 9 week 5th reading SOLs

| homophone | two words that sound alike but have different meanings |
| synonym | two words that mean the same thing |
| antonym | two words that mean the opposite thing |
| main idea | what a passage is mostly about |
| supporting details | ideas that relate back to the main idea |
| opinion | cannot be proven and is not true for everyone |
| fact | is true and can be proven |
| cause | the reason WHY something happens |
| effect | the event that happens |
| compare | identifying what is the SAME about two things |
| contrast | identifying what is DIFFERENT about two things |
| adjective | a word that describes a person, place or thing |
| adverb | a word that describes how, when or why about a VERB |
| contractions | two words squished together (example: CAN'T) |
| inference | putting together what is read with what is in my brain to make a conclusion |
| character | the person or animal in a story |
| plot | what happens in a story |
| problem | the conflict in a story |
| resolution | how a conflict is solved |
| prediction | an educated guess about what is going to happen |
| noun | a person place or thing |
| fiction | a type of text that is not true that is meant to entertain |
| nonfiction | a type of text that give facts and is true |
| autobiography | a nonfiction book that is written by the author about the author |
| biography | a nonfiction book that is written by the author about someone else |
| glossary | like a mini dictionary of important words in a nonfiction text |
| map | shows where in the world something is |
| photograph | shows exactly what something looks like |
| caption | explains what is in a photograph or an illustration |
| label | gives information about a specific part of a photograph or picture |
| table of contents | lists chapter names and page numbers |
| index | alphabetically lists important concepts in a nonficiton text AND gives a page number where each can be found |
