6th Grade Nonfiction Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Fact A statement that can be proven.
Nonfiction Form of literature that tells about real people.
Biographer The writer of a biography.
Opinion States a thought that cannot be proved. (Mint ice cream is the best flavor on earth.
Chronological Order The order in which the events happen.
Autobiographies The person writes about his or her own life.
Biographies Someone else writes about the person.
Point of view Who will narrate the or tell the story.
Generaliztion A statement that expresses a broad idea.
Cause What makes an event happen.
Effect The result of of the event.
What is the author's purpose? To inform, teach, and persuade.
Inference An intelligent guess. You add together details from the text and what you already know from your life. You make smart guesses about what is going on or what the author is trying to say. This is a higher thinking skill and takes practice.
Conclusion A judgement made after looking at all information in a written piece. You are taking all the details and developing a logical conclusion at the end.
Summarizing You tell only the most important ideas in your own words. A good summary is brief (short) and does not include unimportant details.
Cause and effect It's relationship. The connection between why something happened and what the results were
Generalization If something is true about a smaller group, it's probably true about a larger group.
