| Tone | the writer's or speaker's attitude toward a subject, character, or audience; conveyed through the author's choice of diction, imagery, figurative language, and/or details. |
| Summary | a brief restatement of the main ideas of a piece of writing |
| Symbolism | the use of any object, person, place, or action that has a meaning in itself while standing for something larger than itself, such as a quality, attitude, belief, or value |
| Synonym | words with similar meanings |
| Context Clues | information in words and phrases surrounding an unfamiliar word that hint at the meaning of the unfamiliar word |
| Theme | the central message of a literary work; it is not the same as a subject, which can be expressed in a word or two |
| Diction | a word choice intended to convey a certain effect |
| Imagery | the words or phrases a writer uses to represent persons, objects, actions, feelings, and ideas descriptively by appealing to the senses |

| Ultimate Boon | The goal of the quest is achieved. All the previous steps serve to prepare and purify the person for this step. |
| Appositive | A noun that renames a noun. My mother, a lovely woman, baked cupcakes for my birthday. |
| Purpose of body paragraphs | 1) contain a topic sentence (examples from the text to support your topic ideas), and 2) commentary that describes the humor or explains the intended reaction (effect). |
| Topic sentence | a sentence that states the main idea of a paragraph; in an essay, it also makes a point that supports the thesis statement. |
| Commentary/Supporting Detail | explanation of the way the facts, details and/or examples in a paragraph or essay support the topic sentence |
