Stylistic Devices, Structures, and Types

| Aside | A comment one character makes aloud on stage that at least one other character on stage cannot hear |
| Breaking the Fourth Wall | When a character on stage humorously notes the presence of the audience and one's own existence as a fictional character |
| Dialogue | Words characters say to each other |
| Monologue | A long speech that is part of a dialogue |
| Soliloquy | A speech made alone on stage, symbolizing inner thoughts |
| Prop | Any physical item picked up and used by a character |
| Stage Directions | Instructions for movement in the script |
| Voice Directions | Instructions for timing, volume, tone, etc. in the script |
| Stichomythia | Rapid, back-and-forth dialogue |
| Act | A major division in a drama |
| Scene | A subdivision of an act. Generally, a scene begins and ends with no characters on stage. |
| Comedy | A play with a happy ending |
| Tragedy | A play with a tragic hero |
| Tragic Hero | A character (generally an upper-class male) who, despite his many virtues, has one tragic flaw |
| Tragic Flaw | A negative personality trait that leads to the suffering and/or death of the tragic hero and his/her loved ones |
