Chapter 2: Test Preparation and Vocabulary Review

What is the associative property? The grouping does not matter. Example: a+(b+c)=(a+b)+c
What is the commutative property? The order does not matter. Example: a+b=b+a
What is the distributive property? States that the product of a number and a sum is equal to the sum of the individual products of the addends and the number. Example: a(b + c) = ab + ac.
What is the identity property? The number multiplied or added which allows me to get the number back again. Example: 9+0=9 1a=a
What is a term? Any number or variable connected by the addition or subtracting symbol. Example: 4x+9 4x, 9
What are like terms? Terms that contain the same variable(s).
What is a variable term? Any term that contains a variable. Example: 4x
What is a numeric term? Any term made up of only numbers. Example: 9
What is a constant? The numeric term is also called the constant, and a numeric term is any term made up of only numbers. Example: 9
What is an open sentence? An equation that contains [a] variable(s).
What is an inequality? A mathematical statement that contains greater or less than symbols; <, >.
What does an open circle mean? The number is not included in our solution. Not equal to - <, >
What does a closed circle mean? Means the number is included in our solution. = to - ≤, ≥
What are the steps for solving equations? 1. Identify variable 2. Write equation 3. Solve 4. Sentence
What are the steps for solving inequalities? When we multiply or divide by a negative number, you need to reverse the inequality sign.
What does -x mean? -x means -1.
What does x mean? x means 1.
Solve 2x-3y+5-5x+2y-8 -3x-1y-3
Solve 3(2x-4) 6x-12
Solve -(2x-4) -2x+4
Solve 3(2x-4)-3(x-2) 3x-6
