Literary terminology from African Literature unit

| flat character | a character who reveals only one personality trait but may serve an important purpose in a story |
| round character | a character who shows varied and sometimes contradictory traits |
| static character | a literary character who undergoes little to no inner change, who does not grow or develop through the course of a story |
| anthropomorphism | literary technique of giving human qualities to animals or inanimate objects |
| motivation | Stated or implied reason or cause for a character’s actions |
| trickster tales | Common to many African folktales, tricksters often cause trouble that brings about a necessary change in society |
| setting | Time and place in which events in a literary work occur; often includes historical perspective, season, time of day, customs/cultures, etc. |
