Lesson 2.4: Variables and Equations

Define equation. A mathematic statement that contains an equal sign.
Define open sentence. An equation that contains a variable(s).
Name the three types of equations. Equations are either true, false, or open.
How do you check a solution? A number is a solution of an equation if the number makes the equation true.
What does the word "is" mean in equations? The word "is" means equal to.
Give an example of an open sentence. (Open equation) Twenty minus x is three 20-x=3 Open
Give an example of a true equation. 3 plus 5 is 8 3+5=8 True
Give an example of a false equation. Nine times the opposite of five is forty-five 9(-5)=45 False
Tell whether this equation is true, false, or an open sentence. Seven less than the product of three and a number is equal to 4 ____ 3x-7=4 Open
