Fiction Terms

QuestionAnswer
Short Story A brief work of fiction
Exposition a writing or speech that explains a process or presents
Climax the highest point of interest or suspense(point of no return)
Falling Action Follows the climax- release of tension
Denouement/Resolution tying up of loose ends- a general insight or change is conveyed
Conflict Struggle between opposing forces
Protagonist The main character/hero/heroine- the one with whom we empathize
Plot sequence of events in a literary work
Rising Action all the events leading up to the climax
Internal Conflict internal conflict oneself- man vs himself(guilt,anger,pride)
External conflict outside oneself
Characters a person or animal that takes part in the action of a literary work
Flat character shows only one trait
Round character shows many traits
Static Character Doesn't change during the course of the work
Dynamic Character develops and grows during the course of the work
Antagonist the character who is against/oppose the main character
Direct Characterization directly states a character's trait
Indirect Characterization provides clues about a character by describing looks, action and words
Point of View perspective of the person telling the story
Dialogue conversation between characters
Irony portrays differences between appearance and reality
Verbal Irony when words are used to suggest the opposite of what is actually meant
