Solar Nebula Theory

Explains major steps in formation of solar system

QuestionAnswer
Step 1 How did the solar nebula form? A cloud composed mostly of hydrogen and helium as well as gas and dust forms from previous generations of stars. This cloud is from which the solar system is theorized to have originated.
Step 2 What caused the solar nebula to collapse in on itself? Due to some disturbance (scientists believe a supernova explosion) the solar nebula begins to gradually collapse in on itself.
Step 3 How did the planetary disk form? The matter around the center of the solar nebula spins up and flattens into a planetary disk. It is a thin disk of gas and dust around the forming sun at the center.
Step 4 What is a protostar? The heat and pressure at the center of the planetary disk become so great that a protostar is formed. It will later become our Sun.
Step 5 What occurred during condensation? Tiny dust particles from the cooling planetary disk (gas) begin to grow by a process called condensation where one atom molecule is added at a time to make larger particles.
Step 6 How did accretion help form planetesimals? The particles in the planetary disk begin to stick together to form larger particles that end up the size of boulders or asteroids through accretion. These large bodies are called planetesimals.
Step 6 What is accretion? sticking together of solid particles to produce a larger particle
Step 6 What is a planetesimal? small body formed from solar nebula that eventually grows into a protoplanet
Step 7 How were the planets eventually formed? The planetesimals accelerate in growth accumulating all of the solid matter close to their own orbit. These are the protoplanets which will later become the planets of our solar system.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
