Gram Negative Cocci--Neisseria and Moraxella

What is the gram stain reaction for Neisseria and Moraxella? gram negative diplococci (kidney bean shape)
What is the oxidase reaction for Neisseria and Moraxella? oxidase positive (purple color)
What media does Neisseria grow on? chocolate agar, Modified Thayer Martin (contains vancomycin, colistin, nystatin)--usually doesn't grow on blood agar NEVER REFRIGERATE THE SPECIMEN
What atmosphere does Neisseria require? Neisseria are capnophiles--need increased CO2
What tests are positive for Neisseria gonorrhea? N. gonorrhea ferments glucose (only)and is oxidase positive and catalase positive; is PRO positive
What tests are positive for Neisseria meningitidis? N. meningitidis ferments glucose and maltose; is oxidase and catalase positive; is GGA positive and may be PRO positive
What tests are positive for Moraxella catarrhalis? Moraxella doesn't ferments sugars; is oxidase and catalase positive; is butyrate esterase positive (IB); is DNase positive
What diseases does Neisseria gonorrhea cause? gonorrhea, sexually transmitted disease, eye infections in babies (prevented by putting antibiotic drops in babies eyes); disseminated gonococcal infection, PID
What diseases does Neisseria meningitis cause? normal flora of upper respiratory tract, people maybe carriers; meningitis especially in college age group and military recruits, there is vaccination for group A, C, Y and W135; fulminant meningococcemia--and DIC
What diseases does Moraxella catarrhalis cause? it may be part of normal flora in nasopharynx; it is associated with respiratory tract infections including bronchitis and pneumonia in older and immunocompromised adults, and otitis media and sinusitis in children.
