| alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
| allusion | a reference to a moment in history, a literary work, or a work of art |
| analogy | a comparison that explains one subject by pointing out its similarities to another |
| annotation | notes added to a text in order to explain or give bibliographical information |
| antagonist | the character in opposition to the protagonist |
| antonym | word opposite in meaning to another word |
| antithesis | direct contrast of structurally parallel word groupings, generally for purpose of contrast |
| archetype | term applied to an image/plot patter/character type that occurs frequently in literature |
| bandwagon | advertising technique that states/implies that you should do something because everyone else is doing it |
| bias | opinionated or subjective |
| cause and effect | pattern organized by initiation and result |
| characterization | developing the personality of a character |
| direct characterization | author tells directly |
| indirect characterization | show the character by their actions, by perceptions of other characters |
| chronological | time order |
| citing authority | appealing to a subject matter expert |
| cliche | over-used expression lacking originality; events can be cliche as well |
