Who were considered citizens in in Sparta? Sparta- to be a citizen your parents had to live there and you had to be born there. Periokoi- moved into Spart- noncitizen but could serve in war. An Athens citizen
What was the Athenian economy based on? Trade with city states. Known for having a great harbor for trade and travel. Land not good for farming.
What was the Spartan economy based on? The economy relied on farming and conquering other city states- they made the conquered had to pay tribute
What governments did the city states of Athens and Sparta use? Athens- direct democracy Sparta-oligarchy
How were slaves treated in Athens. Athens- Couldn't own property or vote, treated harshly, not allowed to go outside alone, born or captured into slavery, couldn't buy way out.
How were boys educated in Sparta? Wanted to produce smart (music) healthy citizens. Education centered around fighting and war. At age 7 they learn to fight. They were trained to endure pain (march without shoes, steal without being caught)
What strategies did the ancient Greeks use to beat the Persians during the battles of the Persian Wars (Salamis, Plataea, Thermopylae)? Salamis- They tricked the Persians to come into the harbor where they surrounded them with the navy. Plataea- The few persians were over run by 80,000 Greeks. Thermopylae-Traders showed Persians secret passage through the mtns. to defeat the Greeks
Explain the different types of drama used in ancient Greek plays. Comedy, tragedy, Satire (short plays between acts of the tragedy to make fun of the main character)
What different architectural achievements did the Athenians come up with during the Golden Age? Made sculptures out of bronze and marble Greeks were the first to use columns in their buildings They used balance and order as an idea for beauty for their structures slanted roof; Parthenon- Famous temple to honor Athena
How did Alexander the Great impact Greek language and culture?
How did Alexander the Great unify the areas he conquered? (3 ways) He showed the respect to the cultures he conquered (they could keep their beliefs and adopted some as his own), spread Greek cultures and ideas, he encouraged the marriage of Macidonians and Persians.
What civialization did the the right to participate in voting originate? Athens
How did the geography of Greece impact the Greek city states? They used the 3 surrounding bodies of water for trade, transporation, recreation, culture sharing, and war. Mtns. acted as a blockaid against enemies but could use it for higher ground in battle, Land no great for planting

How were assemblies used in Athens and Sparta? Sparta- To debate and vote on laws Athens- vote on laws
How was the Athenian democracy different from our government today? Athens used a direct democracy where citizens vote directly on all laws and issues We use the representative democracy - where we choose people to make decisions about laws.

How were slaves treated in Sparta? Women and slaves did have some rights. They could marry who they wanted. They could buy their own freedom, remarry. Women were treated almost equally as men.
How were boys educated in Athens? Depended on good citizens. Boys only grew up to be citizens. They were homeschooled until age 6 or 7. Boys and girls educated differently. Only boys formally educated. At 18 start military training- then public speaking.
