Lesson 2.3 Part 1: Simplifying Variable Expressions

Define term. Any number or variable connected by the addition or subtracting symbol.
Give an example of a term. 4x+9 4x, 9
Define numeric term. Any term made up of only numbers.
Give an example of a numeric term. 9
Define variable term. Any term that contains a variable.
GIve an example of a variable term. 4x
What are the parts of a variable term? 1. Variable 2. Coefficient 4x x is the variable, 4 is the coefficient.
What is a numeric term also called or referred to as? The constant.
Define like terms. Terms that contain the same variable(s).
Define how to simplify expressions. Combine like terms by adding the coefficients of the like terms.
State an equation and show the parts of that equation. x+2y-8 x, 2y, -8
State an equation and identify the variable, coefficient, and constant. x-5 Variable: x Coefficient: 1 Constant: -5
