| narrator | person or character who actually tells the story |
| dialouge | conversations that character have with one another |
| main character | the most important character the author paints a vivid picture of them you are focused on them |
| developing character | they change in some way by the end of the story their experiences teach them something new or cause them to think differently |
| supporting character | they are not very important, however, they help build plot |
| static character | they don't change throughout the book |
| protagonist | the major character with whom you become emotionally involoved often a good or heroic type |
| antagonist | the person or force that works against the hero (protagonist) of the story |
| setting | the place and time frame in which the story takes place |
| plot | the sequence of events from beginning to end |
| plot line | the planned action or series of events in a story five parts: Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution |
| exposition | part of the story, usually near the beginning, in which characters are introduced, the background is explained and the setting described |
| rising action | central part of the story during which various problems arise |
| climax | high point or turning point in the story the moment you have been waiting for throughout the book |
| falling action | action and dialogue following the climaz that lead the reader into the story's end |
| resolution | part of the story in which the problems are solved and the action comes to a satisfying end |
| mood | the feeling a piece of literature creates in a reader |
| theme | central idea |
| conflict | problem or struggle between two opposing forces |
| character vs character | a problem between characters |
| character vs themselves | a problem within a character's own mind |
| character vs society | a problem between a character and society, school, the law or some tradition |
| character vs nature | a problem between a character and some element of nature- a blizzard, a hurricane, a moutain climb, etc. |
| foreshadowing | hint or warning that something is going to happen |
