Verb Vocabulary

Chapter 15 Actions, Linking, and Helping Verbs

QuestionAnswer
Action Verb tells action someone or something is performing
Transitive Verb action verb that directs action from the performer of the action toward the receiver of the actions
Intransitive Verb expresses action or tells something about the subject but does not direct action toward another noun or pronoun
Direct Object noun or pronoun that receives the action of a verb
Linking Verb connects a noun or pronoun with a word that identifies or describes it
Predicate Adjective an adjective in the predicate that follows a linking verb and describes the subject
Predicate Nominative a noun in the predicate that follows a linking verb and renames the subject
Helping Verb verb added to another verb to make a verb phrase
Verb Phrase a group of words consisting of a main verb (action or linking) and a helping verb(s)
Main Verb final verb in a verb phrase
Action Verb Tip "Can I _____?" - put the word in the blank to see if it is what type of verb?
Linking Verb Tip Replace the word with "am," "is," or "are" - if the sentence makes sense what type of verb is it?
Adjective Questions These questions are used to find what part of speech?: What kind? Which one? How many?
Adverb Questions These questions are used to find what part of speech?: When? Where? Why? How?
Predicate part of the sentence that tells about the subject
Subject what or whom the sentence is about
