Law of conservation of mass Nothing is ever created or destroyed, only changed.
Physical change A usually reversible change in the physical properties of a substance, as size or shape.
Chemical Change A usually irreversible chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms of one or more substances and a change in their chemical properties or composition, resulting in the formation of at least one new substance.
Element One of a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances. The simplest form of matter.
Chemical formula A representation of a substance using symbols for its constituent elements.
Element (diatomic) molecule A molecule consisting of 2 atoms either the same or different elements.
Compound Molecule a compound made of 2 or more nonmetal elements.
Chemical equation A symbolic representation of what happens when chemicals come in contact with one another. A balanced chemical equation shows how many of what molecules react, how many of what molecules result, and sometimes the state of the substances
Chemical reaction A process in which one or more substances reactants are chemically changed into one or more new substances products.
reactants (in a chemical equation) A substance participating in a chemical reaction, especially a directly reacting substance present at the initiation of the reaction.
Products (in a chemical equation) A product is a substance that is formed as the result of a chemical reaction.
coeffiecent (in a chemical equation) Coefficient is the number of molecules of reactants or products.
subscript (in a chemical equation) It is the number of atoms in the preceding element.
