adjunct A thing added to something else as a supplementary rather than an essential part.
bellwether The leading sheep of a flock, with a bell on its neck. An indicator or predictor of something.
caterwaul Make a shrill howling or wailing noise: "the caterwauling of a pair of bobcats"; "a caterwauling guitar".
chimerical being or relating to or like a chimera
effete Affected, overrefined, and ineffectual: "effete trendies from art college
fait accompli An accomplished, presumably irreversible deed or fact.
hidebound Unwilling or unable to change because of tradition or convention: "you are hidebound by your petty laws"
hierarchy A system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority.
liturgy A form or formulary according to which public religious worship, esp. Christian worship, is conducted.
mirage An optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions
morass An area of muddy or boggy ground
noisome Having an extremely offensive smell
