What is an Epic? A long narrative poem

What makes up a epic hero? o Larger-than-life figure o Usually male o Represents the ideals of a nation or race o Takes part in a long arduous journey intrepidly accomplished o Has superhuman strength o Accomplishes extraordinary deeds in battle
Where is the setting of the poem? The setting of the poem is huge: worldwide, or even larger
Who else has an active role in epics? Gods and other mystical creatures have an active role
What do epithets consist of? An adjective or phrase that is used to describe a distinct quality of a person or thing. Poets used them as a musical phrase to complete a line of poetry Help the audience understand characterization Example: “the winedark sea”; “pale Persephone”
