QuestionAnswer
the scientific study of weather meteorology
a person who studies the causes and effects of Earth's weather meteorologist
weather that is dangerous or causes damage severe weather
let people know what kind of weather to expect in the next day or next week forecasts
when a specific amount of air is forced into a smaller space, the air is _____. compressed
when the compressed air pushes back, this push is called _____. pressure
_________ ________ are properties of air that affect weather. weather factors
the gases surrounding Earth are called the _____. atmosphere
_____ is the amount of matter in an object. mass
_____ is the force an object exerts because of gravity. weight
measures temperature. temperature is measured in degrees. this is used in Celsius (C*) and Fahrenheit (F*) thermometer
used to determine the direction from which the wind is coming. measured in cardinal directions compass
measures wind speed. miles per hour anemometer
measures relative humidity. relative humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. It is a percentage. it is a percentage. hygrometer
measures air pressure. measured in millibars and inches of mercury barometer
_____ is the stuff that everything in the world is made of. matter
Mass is measured in _____. grams
to confirm something has mass, it must be _____. weighed
____ is pull or force between Earth and the matter in an object or substance. weight
_____ ___ ___ slightly at different places on Earth. weight can vary
in outer space, away from planets, objects become weightless, but their ____ ___ ____ ____. mass does not change
how many layers are there in the atmosphere? four
how are the layers classified? changes in temperature
the four layers of the atmosphere troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere
we live in the lowest, inner layer of the atmosphere.it's where weather occurs. the depth is 16 km above the equator to less than 9 km above the poles troposphere
top of troposphere to 50 km. second layer and it contains the ozone layer. it protects earth's living things from ultraviolet radiation from the sun stratosphere
50 km above earth's surface to 80 km. layer that protects earth's surface from meteoroids mesosphere
outermost layer of atmosphere. 80km to space. divided into two layers thermosphere
begins 80km to 400km. auroras occur ionosphere
outer layer exosphere
contains almost all the mass in atmosphere troposphere
as altitude increases in the troposphere, temperature also increases false
at the top of the troposphere, the temperature stops decreasing true
the temperature of the lower section is about -60*C. middle portion contains a ozone layer stratosphere
temperatures approach -90*C in outer layer. protects earth's surface from meteoroids mesosphere
outermost layer. air is very thin. no definite outer limit thermosphere
why is the thermosphere so hot? it has nitrogen molecules which convert the solar energy into heat.
