What is an element? A substance that can't be broken down to a smaller part.
How many naturally occurring elements are there? 92
What is an atom? The smallest part of an element.
Atomic number The amount of protons in an element.
Isotopes When atoms have the same atomic number but different mass number.
First energy level has one spherical s orbital
second energy level max 8 electrons, one spherical s orbital
higher energy levels has s and p orbitals, more complex shaped orbitals
Chemical bonds The attraction, sharing, or transfer of outer shell electrons from atom to atom
Molecules atoms that have combined chemically
Compound two or more molecules combined
Molecular/chemical formula solves for the number and type of atoms
