prey | An animal that is hunted by another animal for food. |
parasite | An organism that lives in or on another organism and feeds on them. |
host | The organism that a parasite lives in or on. |
food chain | The path that energy and nutrients follow in an ecosysytem. |
food web | The overlapping food chains in an ecosystem. |
primary consumer | An organism that eats producers. |
secondary consumers | An organism that eats primary consumers. |
habitat | Physical area in which an organism lives. |
niche | An organism's particular role in an ecosystem, or how it makes its living. |
adaptation | A characteristic that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce in a partic ularparticular environment. |
metamorphosis | The change in shape and form some organisms go through during their life cycles. |
camouflage | A structural adaptation that enables an organism to blend in with its environment to hide from predators. |
migration | A movement of people or animals from one region to another, usualy due to a change in enviornment or weather. |
life cycle | The entire span in the life of an organism from one generation to the next. |
species | A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
larva | An immature form of an animal that looks very different from the adult. |
instinct | A complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned, A complex inborn pattern of behaviors that help ensure survival and reproduction. |
ecosystem | A system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment. |
extinct | A term that typically describes a species that no longer has any known living individuals. |
population | The number of organisms of a particular species in a community. |
community | All the living things in an ecosystem. |
hibernation | A period of inactivity that some animals experience in winter that allows them to survive on stored body fat. |
inherited trait | A characteristic that is passed from parent to offspring. |
