Barrier Islands | Pieces of land surrounded by water. They have sandy beaches. Their natural function is to protect the mainland from effects of waves on shore. |
Inlets | Water filled spaces between barrier islands. As the tide changes, the amount of water in the space will change. The shape of these can be changed. |
Beaches | Shorelines made of sand. Shorelines are always changing due to waves and currents. |
Estuaries | The area where a river meets the ocean. |
Salt Marshes | Found in estuaries. They act like a sponge during storms to soak up excess water. |

Sand Dunes | These sweep up in mounds. Plant's rots hold these in place. |
Currents | Ongoing movements of water. |
Tides | The level of water which rises and falls every day. |
Waves | Repeated movement of water lapping against the shore. |
Ocean Shore Zone | Made up of barrier islands, inlets, beaches, estuaries, salt marshes, sediment, sand dunes, currents, tides, and waves. |
