Ocean Shore Zone

Barrier Islands Pieces of land surrounded by water. They have sandy beaches. Their natural function is to protect the mainland from effects of waves on shore.
Inlets Water filled spaces between barrier islands. As the tide changes, the amount of water in the space will change. The shape of these can be changed.
Beaches Shorelines made of sand. Shorelines are always changing due to waves and currents.
Estuaries The area where a river meets the ocean.
Salt Marshes Found in estuaries. They act like a sponge during storms to soak up excess water.
Sediment Weathered down material carried by water or wind.
Sand Dunes These sweep up in mounds. Plant's rots hold these in place.
Currents Ongoing movements of water.
Tides The level of water which rises and falls every day.
Waves Repeated movement of water lapping against the shore.
Ocean Shore Zone Made up of barrier islands, inlets, beaches, estuaries, salt marshes, sediment, sand dunes, currents, tides, and waves.
