type of speech | description |
noun | a word that names a person, place, thing, or and idea |
pronoun | a word that takes the place of one or more nouns |
action verb | tells what action a subject is performing |
adjective | a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun |
adverb | a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb |
preposition | a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence |
conjection | connects words or groups of words |
interjection | a word that expresseses strong feeling |
linking verb | links the subject with another word in the sentence that either renames or describes the subject |
verb phrase | a main verb plus one or more helping verbs |
prepositional phrases | a group of words made up of a preposition, its object, and any words that modify the object |
direct object | a noun or a pronoun that answers the question Whom? or What? after an action verb |
indirect object | a noun or pronoun that answers the questions "To whom?" or "For whom?" after an action verb. (Mark has two tickets for you. Mark has tickets for who? For you.) |
predicate nominatave | a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and identifies, renames, or explains the subject |
predicate adjective | is a adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies the subject |
adjective phrase | a prepositional phrase that is used to modify a noun or pronoun |
adverb phrase | a prepositional phrase that is used mainly to modify a verb |
participle | a verb form that is used as an adjective |
participle phrase | a participle with its modifiers and complements-all working together as an adjective |
clause | a group of words that has a subject and a verb |
independant clause | a clause that can stand on its own as a sentence(a complete thought) |
subordinate clause | cannot stand alone because it does NOT complete a thought |
adjective clause | is a subordinate clause that is used to modify a noun or a pronoun |
simple sentence | is only one independent clause |
compound sentence | two or more independent clauses |
complex sentence | is one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses |
run-on | two or more sentences that are written as one sentence. They (sentences) are marked by a comma or no mark at all |
principle parts of a verb | the present, the present participle, the past, and the past participle |
sentence fragment | a group of words that does not express a complete thought |
a regular verb forms its past and past participle by adding ___ to the present | -d or -ed |
active voice | indicates that the subject is performing the action |
passive voice | indicates that the action of the verb is being performed upon the subject |
nominative case | used for subjects and predicate nominatives; i you he she it we you they |
objective case | used for direct objects indirect objects and objects of prepositions; me you him her it us you them |
possessive case | used to show ownership or possession; my mine you yours his her hers its our ours your yours their theirs |
case | the form of a noun or pronoun that indicates its use in a sentence |
antecedent | the word or group of words that a pronoun refers to, or replaces |
