Bohr model | a model of the atom, developed by Danish scientist, Niels Bohr, that shows electrons moving in orbit around the nucleus of the atom |
electron cloud model | the model of the atom that shows electrons forming a cloud as they move around the nucleus of the atom |
element | matter that is made of just one kind of atom |
atomic number | the number of protons in an atom of an element |
periodic table | a chart that contains many facts about the elements and their atoms |
Dmitri Mendeleev | a Russian scientist who in 1886 created the periodic table of the elements arranged by number and family |
Neils Bohr | danish scientist who developed the bohr model of the atom |
atomic mass | weight of the atom |
energy levels | levels of electrons in the atom |
metals | shiny, can be shaped, good conductors of heat and electricity ex-iron (Fe) |
non-metals | dull, can not be shaped, not good conductors of heat and electricity ex-hydrogen (H) |
semi-metals | shares properties of both metals and non-metals ex-silicon (Si) |
noble gases | don't combine easily with other elements ex-helium (He) |
family | a group of elements found vertically on the periodic table having similar characteristics |
problem | a question or problem that you can research and test |
research | the background info about a scientific problem gained from using the internet, books, etc. |
hypothesis | predictions or an educated guess based in the research |
procedure | the steps you will follow to solve a scientific problem |
observations | any changes you notice during the experiment. could be in the form of smell, change in matter, size, shape, color, etc. |
data | the info that is gathered during in the experiment represented in a table, chart, graph, etc. |
conclusion | statement about the results of the experiment. states whether hypothesis was true, false, partially true |
theory | final factual statement about the results of the experiment applied in general terms |
order of the scientific method | problem, research, hypothesis, procedure, materials, experiment, data, observations, conclusion, and theory |
