Treaty of Westphalia   A collection of treaties that brought an end to the Thirty Years war. Several European countries either lost or gained land and or power as a result of these treaties.

France during the seventieth century   France was the dominant country during the seventieth century. Louis XIV's absolute rule promoted French culture through out Europe.

The English war   The English war was caused by a mixture of political, constitutional, and religious issues and differences. Charles the first and Parliament split, causing one of the first civil wars in Europe.

The Glorious Revolution   Social-poltical factors combined with religious issues that produced a chain of events that lead to the Glorious Revolution.

The Treaty of Utrecht   This treaty put an end to the War of Spanish Succession that had started due to arguments on who should inherit Spain and its possessions. The treaty confirmed the system of sovereign states established earlier by the Peace of Westphalia.

Russia, Prussia, and Austria   These three states became dominant in Europe during the Middle Ages. Russia, Prussia, and Austria replaced the once string powers of The Holy Roman Empire, The Republic of Poland, and The Ottoman Empire.

Serfdom   Serfdom continued and expanded in the east due to slow development, while the west rid of serfdom completely.

Austria   Habsburgs recovered their power; repulsed the Turks; resolved albeit temporarily, and had problems with succession.

Prussia   Dominated Eastern Europe by cultivating militarism among the Junkers, the Prussian land-owning nobility.

Russia   The Romanov tsars pursued strategies of absolutism; Peter the Great pursued the rapid westernization of Russian society, which resulted in a social revolution.
