| Fundamental worth of each individual? | Each individual, no matter what his or her station in life, is a separate and distinct being. -Sometimes the interests of many come before the welfare of one or a few people.

||||
| Equality of all persons? | All men are created equal." -All are entitled to equality of opportunity before the law. -Everyone must be free to develop himself or herself as fully as he or she can or cares to.

||||
| Majority rule & minority rights? | -The majority rule must be restrained to a certain extent. If unchecked the majority could destroy democracy. -Minority rights play a large role in controlling majority rule.

|
||||
| Necessity of Compromise? | In a democracy, there must be room for give-and-take. It is a matter of compromise- the process of blending and adjusting, or reconciling competing views and interests.

|
||||
| Compromise is essential for two reasons? | (1) democracy says that individuals are equal to all others. (2) few public questions have only two sides. Most can be answered in several ways.

| individual freedom? | Absolute freedom can exists only in a state of anarchy: in the total absence of government; ends when it disturbs the freedom of others
