7th Short Story

QuestionAnswer
What is an idiom? An idiom is a symbolic expression. For example. "it is raining cats and dogs."
Flashback the action that interrupts to show an event that happened at an earlier time
Rising Action A series of events that build from the conflict. It leads to the climax.
Plot Story line; what happens; sequence of events
Theme General idea or insight about life that a writer wishes to express; author’s message.
Falling Action The events after the climax which close the story.
Motivation Why a character does something, the reason.
Setting Includes the time, period, place,
Climax Highest point of tension in a story, outcome can often be predicted, conflict is overcome by protagonist.
Protagonist Central character who must overcome the conflict.
Antagonist The force that is causing a problem, ANTAGONIZING the protagonist.
Conflict A struggle, a problem
Internal Conflict Conflict within, example an emotion, a decision.
External Conflict Conflict with something outside of the character, another character, nature.
Resolution The end of the story.
Point of view The angle from which a story is told.
First person uses the pronoun I, character within the story is telling the story.
Third person outside narrator is telling the story.
Claim Sentence First sentence in a short response, must answer the question and restate.
Lead in sentences How to introduce a quote without saying. "this evidence"

Central Idea Refers to what the story is mostly about and you are allowed to mention the story, article.
Victor's main conflict in "The Seventh Grade" Victor v himself, wants to make Teresa his girl.

In Cat/Dog what is the resolution of the story? Jan Skiba returns the mirror to the peddler.
In Cat/Dog what is the theme of the story? Inner beauty is more important than outer beauty.
