Key People and Places in ASL History

Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet Minister that traveled to Europe to learn how to teach deaf children. He was first principal of ASD.
Alice Cogswell The little girl that inspired Thomas Gallaudet to establish a school for the deaf in America.
Abbe Sicard Taught deaf students using French Sign Language at the Schools for the Deaf in France. One of his students was Laurent Clerc.
Jean Massieu One of Sicard's teachers at the French School for the Deaf
Laurent Clerc One of Sicard's teachers that came to America with Gallaudet to establish the first school for the deaf.
American School for the Deaf The first school for the deaf in America - in Hartford, Conn.
Edward Minor Gallaudet Son of Thomas Gallaudet, and the founder of Gallaudet University.
Abraham Lincoln President that signed the charter to begin Gallaudet University.
Gallaudet University The only Liberal Arts University in the World for the deaf located in Washington, DC.
Abbe Charles Michel de l'Epee Learned signs from French deaf people and set up the first school for the deaf in France.
Martha's Vineyard Island community in which everyone signed. Their deaf children attended ASD and shared their sign language (MVSL) with the other children. Their signs plus the French signs became ASL.
