Vocabulary Terms

QuestionAnswer
Observation Anything detected through human senses or with measuring devices that enhance our senses
Experiment Scientific investigation performed under controlled conditions
Dependent Variable Affected by the experiment
Independent Variable Affects the dependent variable
Model Representation of the real world
Scientific Theory Explanation of something believed to be true
Biology The scientific study of life
Interdependence Organisms depend on other organisms for survival
Symbiosis Relationship between two or more organisms where at least one of the organisms benefits
Competition Organisms compete for the same resources
Population Organisms of the same species that live in the same area
Community All populations in a given area
Ecosystem All living things together and the non-living environment i.e., sun, water, wind
Biome Group of similar ecosystems
Biosphere The part of the Earth where all life exists
Biodiversity Variety, assortment, or range of living things
Cell Basic unit of life
Tissue Group of cells with a similar structure and function
Organ Structure composed of one or more types of tissue
Organ system Group of organs that work together to do a certain job
Organism Individual living thing made up of one or more organ systems
Cell Theory The cell is the basic unit of life, all living things are composed of cells, cells arise from pre-existing cells
Gene Theory Characteristics of living things are controlled by genes and passed from parent to offspring
